Werner Glinka is a German artist who relocated to California
over twenty years ago. Having established a career as
a high-tech marketing consultant, he turned his attention
to the creation of artworks influenced by the Bauhaus
and stark modernism and has been exhibiting with the gallery
for over three years.
The artist draws upon the beauty of the natural decay
of nature around his home in the fog-shrouded Santa Cruz
Mountains and incorporates found objects and ephemera
into his work. The resulting assemblages convey a beautiful
geometric precision with a decidedly Zen minimalist character.
Materials can range from dried leaves, insect-etched twigs
to pine needles and acorns.
Artist Statement
Visual mantras. An array of simple materials creating
layers of meaning, inviting us to a meditative state.
A visual portal to equanimity. That's how I create and
perceive my work. Mundane objects and materials are forced to render their
unexpected beauty as I create my abstract collages and
assemblages. The tension arises from the paradox of order
in contrast with entropy. I consciously impose formal
order on my work while choosing materials that introduce
the randomness of nature. It just reflects how life actually
works.
I enjoy the process of transforming an ordinary, familiar
object into the centerpiece of a collage, transcending
its original meaning. My technique involves combining
found objects - natural and/or man-made - sand, ash and
paint to create collages of layered structure and deepening
meaning. I work at the cusp between simplicity and complexity
- inspired by a sense of calm and reflection.
Inspiration comes from everyday found objects, a fallen
leaf, a rusty rebar; a crack in the asphalt of a parking
lot might trigger an initial mental image. I further develop
these ideas through rough sketches. The actual collage
is created on wood panel.
A mantra brings you to the center of who you really are.
These Visual Mantras aspire to be an invitation to the
same tender, warm inevitable reality.
