Nuala Creed has been making sculptures for over fifteen years.
Originally from Ireland, her work entitled "Fledglings" evokes notions
of nostalgia and lost childhood memories. These endearing and whimsical
ceramic sculptures of headless children are rendered without heads or
limbs and their clothes and body language imply individual personalities.
They reflect upon that which as adults we often forget - the innocence of
our own childhood and that which shapes and defines our very identity.
Inspired by classes in ceramic sculpture taken at Massachusetts College of Art
in Boston, Creed went on to graduate with a Batchelor of Fine Arts from the
California College of Arts and Crafts. Since then she has participated in several
exhibitions at the gallery including a solo show in 2005. She has exhibited extensively
around the country, received several laudatory reviews of her work and is represented
in a number of public and private collections throughout America.
Artist Statement
The Fledgelings
These pieces are created as memories, shells
of childhood. This body of work explores
childhood. I have always been intrigued by children's
unique expressions and perspectives on life. For "Fledgelings",
I have sculpted a number of children in ceramics. They
are rendered without heads or limbs: their physical forms
fill out the clothes they wear. Each sculpture represents
a unique child. Their clothes and body language reflect
their individual personalities. The children are grouped
in pairs, revealing a range of possible dynamics in relationships
between children. As the butterfly nourishes itself on
its disintegrated caterpillar body, we too are nourished
and nurtured by our childhood.
