Cindy Bennett
view pdf of mustangs (more images available)

Photographer Cindy Bennett has been documenting one of the dwindling number of mustang herds of Northern America. The habitat of the McCullough's Peaks Mustangs stretches across an arid tract of prairie land in Wyoming. These are the descendants of horses Conquistadors brought to the Americas and have roamed these lands for over four hundred years. From the sorrels to the palominos. to the roans and blues, these majestic creatures exhibit spectacular coats famous for their unusual piebald and skewbald patterns.

Sadly however the future of these horses is in great jeopardy. Wyoming is a state rich in natural resources and by a cruel stroke of fate, these mustangs inhabit an area of Northern America offering an abundance of oil, gas, coal and uranium. Today periodic round ups take place and the mustangs are sold to rodeos, private buyers and even foreign food markets. Sponsored by the US Government Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the round ups that are meant to maintain an appropriate population are gradually depleting the herd's genetic diversity and future survival.

With over 60 images in this series, prints are available in limited editions of 10. Mustang will be the subject of an upcoming exhibition in New York City from which a portion of the proceeds will go towards charities that campaign for the horses protection.
