Charles Linder is one of the most renowned artists currently
working in the Bay Area. He has exhibited all over the world and experimented
with a diverse array of media in his work. Linder was the force behind the much
esteemed Refusalon Gallery in San Francisco and is currently part owner of
Linc Real Art on Market Street.
Although specializing in painting, sculpture and multi media, Linder could primarily be
classified as a conceptual artist. He was born in 1967 in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated
with a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from the University of Berkeley,
California. In his art making he places great focus on manipulation of the material
itself such as metal canvases pocked with bullet marks, poured epoxy resin paintings,
found sculptural forms to giant photo murals.
Epoxy resin paintings comprised of hundreds of colored dots, suspended in resin,
create three dimensional surfaces that blur the fine line between sculpture and painting.
Linder also takes great interest in billboard images and old signage and incorporates such
objects into his work with ingenious results.
Appropriating found objects such as retired street/highway signs and old gas cans has
resulted in a number of visually dynamic works. "Marksmen #4" was a giant collection of
bullet riddled signs exhibited in our political art exhibition "Doctrine" offering a
poignant reflection upon the state of gun usage in America.
